NARRATING GARDEN

Lilong Folk Museum Design

TYPE: Undergrad Architectural Studio
YEAR: 2013
In ancient Chinese philosophy, the artificiality is always on second place compared to nature. It does not only illustrate the relationship between the building and surrounding environment, but also human humble attitude facing the nature. In traditional Chinese architecture the most direct relation to this philosophy is the construction of ancient garden. By narrating and constructing the natural form, the designer arranged spatial sequence and visual perception delicately.
This project located in traditional Lilong buildings in Shanghai. Started with analysis of the typical circulation of Lilong blocks, I found a method to apply the spacial sequence of traditional Chinese garden to the design. By reconstructing Lilong elements and delicately arrange the circulation and visual lines, Lilong can also be a pleasing and interesting architectural prototype for people to experience the marvelous nature.
