The diagram is a formal analysis of 18th and 19th century garden plans and a projection of the plans in cartesian space according to the result the analysis. Based on the outlines extracted from the plan drawings, the analysis measures three metrics: formality, linearity, and complexity. Formality is measured through the maximum length of a line detected in the outlines of a drawing. Linearity is measured through the number of lines that are longer than a prede ned value, which re ects the number of linear elements in the plan. Complexity is measured through the total length of the outlines. These values are recorded and mapped along the x, y and z axis, with formality on the x, linearity on the y, and complexity on the z. Our intention is to create a machine that can recognize style in any given garden plan drawing, which is the reason we have included a wide range of garden plans from the French and English garden, to the Chinese
