This project focuses on land use in terms of water rights, wildfire management and agriculture in Vandenberg Air Force base on the coast of Snata Barbara County in central California, where is facing its worst drought in at least a century. Each of these systems operate independently from one another in space, drawing boundaries and intensifying the ecological effects they have on one another. While they are separated spatially, these three elements: water, fire and agriculture’s representative the strawberry, all function on the same annual timescale. So, the institutions our project represents seek to bring together these elements, essentially multiplex them in order to gain the benefits each can have on one another as part of the same system.
So,this project proposes optimizing existing conditions and strategies on Vandenberg so that they begin to coordinate in tandem. Multiplexing the bird, berry, burn seasons so natural phenomena and conditions of the area create opportunities for community participation, spectatorship and resilient systems.
